What’s in a store name? Everything when referring to the world of Espionage, the underground kicks store in Sydney’s Darlinghurst.
With the game of selling ‘authentic’ gear becoming increasingly tainted and deceitful, Espionage seemed the only logical choice of retail representation for store creator and owner, B2.
“The worst thing is trying to educate kids that they’ve just bought some fake sneakers from EBay or from their so-called “connections”. I was selling kicks on www since 1997, but I had to slowly move away from that due to the mass amount of fakes on the web. So I opened this store about 4 and a half years ago, along with my other store on Goulburn Street” B2 explains.
His antidote for this virus is an all-real kicks store that only offers the largest top of the range footwear and apparel – ‘direct from the manufacture’ and not imported himself from unverified overseas sources B2 stresses.
“We have one of the best accounts with Nike, Adidas and Reebok so most styles are exclusive and are not available anywhere else. We also have official accounts with Crooks n Castles, Staple Design, Triumvir3, The Hundreds, Devilock, Kiks TYO, Mack Daddy, Tokyo Empire, Dave White, Sneaker Pimps, Xlarge Clothing, X-Girl, Medicom Toys and more”.
Covertly situated on the corner of Crown and Oxford Street, Espionage’s charm ensues when descending down its stairs to reveal the basement levels opening cavity. An alloy of masculine elements, military and street flare work seamlessly well in creating the stores Kamikaze environment that resembles influences straight out of Tokyo’s back streets.
“I’ve always been fascinated with Underground stores in Harajuku, Japan. There’s just a flavour about underground stores that you can’t quite put to words.”
